
The St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Beterverwagting (BV), located on the East Coast of Demerara, recently celebrated its impressive 150th anniversary. President Dr. Irfaan Ali addressed the congregation, calling this milestone a “glorious anniversary” that reflects a century and a half of service, spiritual growth, and community impact.
In his remarks, President Ali acknowledged the church’s resilience and commitment to its purpose throughout its rich history. He highlighted the significant contributions made by the Catholic Church in Guyana, particularly in healthcare and education, emphasizing its role as a beacon of hope for many in the East Coast of Demerara.
Constructed in 1875, President Ali stated that St. Peter’s is not merely a physical structure but a divinely inspired covenant with the community. He praised the church’s architecture as a testament to heritage and devotion, calling for efforts to maintain the integrity of such historical sites.
To this end, he announced the launch of a program aimed at supporting churches and various faiths in preserving their architectural beauty and spiritual essence.
