In a powerful display of determination, President Dr. Irfaan Ali of Guyana has firmly declared that the country will not concede any part of its territory to Venezuela, emphasizing that its sovereignty over Essequibo remains unchallenged. This declaration comes in the light of Venezuela’s impending elections, during which the country intends to unlawfully appoint a governor and legislative council for the Essequibo region.
Speaking at the National Patriotic Concert held on the Essequibo Coast, President Ali highlighted the significance of patriotism, reiterating that the land belongs to Guyana as demarcated by the 1899 Arbitral Award. He denounced Venezuela’s actions as not only unlawful but also a blatant violation of international norms.
Despite no current signs of electoral activity within Guyana, President Ali affirmed the government’s resolve to protect national integrity. He urged unity among Guyanese citizens against any threats to their territory, calling Venezuela to respect Guyana’s sovereignty.
Moreover, the President pointed out incidents of violence by Venezuelan groups against the Guyana Defence Force, demanding that the Bolivarian Republic hold these criminals accountable. He firmly stated, “We will not bend; we will not yield.” With international backing, especially from countries like Canada, President Ali called for respect for Guyana’s territorial rights, reinforcing the message that Essequibo rightfully belongs to Guyana.
