President Irfaan Ali has announced a strategic national initiative aimed at addressing poverty by lowering living costs and enhancing economic growth alongside social welfare through focused investments in critical sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and infrastructure.
In his address, the president stressed that tackling poverty requires more than just monetary support; it necessitates systemic reforms driven by robust economic growth and improved access to essential services. “To effectively combat poverty and rising living costs, we must expand our economy while creating pathways for the vulnerable,” he stated.
Over the last five years, the administration has eliminated over 200 taxes, prioritizing the financial flexibility of low-income families. This approach will be maintained with plans to simplify the tax framework further.
President Ali mentioned specific areas of focus for the new term, including a 50% reduction in electricity costs and substantial declines in cooking gas prices due to new energy projects. He reassured citizens that there will be no planned increases in water and healthcare service costs.
Job creation is paramount, with the expansion of a part-time job program aimed at supporting single mothers and low-income families, supplemented by upskilling opportunities. Additionally, a development bank is under consideration to finance small and medium enterprises.
These initiatives will enhance the social safety net for women, children, disabled individuals, and single-parent households, ensuring a comprehensive approach to long-term and immediate needs, ultimately fostering an inclusive economy where all citizens can prosper.
