President Ali Unveils Five-Year Plan to Combat Poverty and Living Costs

In a live Facebook address, President Dr. Irfaan Ali presented a comprehensive strategy aimed at alleviating poverty in Guyana over the next five years. He emphasized a multifaceted approach designed to reach various vulnerable demographics, including the unemployed, pensioners, schoolchildren, and indigenous communities.

Dr. Ali committed to enhancing social welfare programs and fortifying safety nets with the goal of empowering these vulnerable groups economically. “We need to establish systems that address immediate challenges while also tackling the deeper, long-term issues related to poverty,” he articulated.

Key initiatives outlined for poverty reduction include: expanding school feeding programs, providing free spectacles and dental care, and facilitating housing support. Importantly, the government plans to lower taxes for low-income earners while simplifying the tax structure—a move aimed at increasing disposable income.
