As Christmas approaches, many Guyanese families are gearing up for a festive season filled with traditional dishes and savory favorites. One major concern is the fluctuation in prices of high-demand commodities like eggs and poultry products.
The Ministry of Agriculture has taken measures to ensure that prices remain stable during this period. In an effort to prevent price gouging by middlemen, the Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) is offering competitive pricing for eggs at $1,300 per tray.
Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha notes that the GMC will break the stronghold held by middlemen and work with producers to sell directly at local markets, offering more affordable prices. He aims to maintain prices between $1,300 and $1,500 and increase outlets across the country to regulate prices.
Similar arrangements are in place for other high-demand commodities during the festive season. The Minister assures that there is no shortage of eggs or poultry products on the local market, citing the country’s efforts to boost its production of hatching eggs as evidence.
Guyana had tripled its hatching egg production in 2024 and has reduced its dependency on imported eggs. The country launched a hatching egg production programme in 2023 with a private partnership, resulting in the production of 27,000 eggs last year.
