The anticipated 8% salary increase for public servants is expected to be disbursed before September, as stated by Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and Vice-President of Guyana. At a recent press conference, he expressed optimism that the Minister of Finance, Ashni Singh, will ensure these funds are distributed prior to the upcoming elections, emphasizing the importance of timely payment for public servants.
Previously, in 2023, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced a retroactive salary boost of 10% effective January 2024 for public servants, followed by an 8% increase in 2025. This initiative is part of a broader reform aimed at enhancing the compensation and benefits for public sector employees. To address disparities in wages, adjustments will be made based on years of service.
For instance, employees in grades GS1 to GS6 with four years of service will see their salaries raised to the middle of their pay scale, with some receiving increases of up to 13%. Those with eight or more years of service in the same grades will be elevated to the top of their scale, receiving boosts of up to 26%.
Additionally, qualification allowances will be implemented, benefiting holders of ACCA, master’s degrees, and PhDs. The government has reiterated its commitment to fulfilling its manifesto promises, viewing these measures as essential for improving public sector morale, retaining skilled personnel, and enhancing the efficiency of services.
