Eighty years have passed since the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The devastating consequences of these bombings are still felt today, yet the radiation from the explosions has become undetectable.
The world was on the brink of World War II in Europe when the Allies turned their attention to Japan in east Asia. The war against Japan resulted in the loss of over 71,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers, including more than 12,000 prisoners of war who died in Japanese captivity.
Despite warnings from the Allies, Japan refused to surrender, leading to the tragic events that unfolded on August 6th and 9th, 1945. The bombings resulted in the loss of approximately 214,000 lives, bringing an end to Japan’s involvement in World War II.
Today, Hiroshima and Nagasaki have emerged as peaceful cities, with a strong focus on promoting nuclear disarmament and environmental sustainability. Visitors can explore the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, which serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of nuclear war.
