Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips has inaugurated the 1.5-megawatt (MW) Kumu Hydropower Station in Region Nine, a significant leap in the government’s effort to promote renewable energy and foster development in Guyana’s hinterland. This initiative resonates with the government’s ambitious goals around energy, food, and climate security — crucial aspects of Guyana’s growth plan.
Highlighting the transformation of the energy landscape, the Prime Minister noted ongoing projects involving gas-to-power facilities, solar energy farms, and hydropower systems to affordably extend energy access across the country. From 2020 to now, this initiative has facilitated the delivery of 14.5 MW of power through these renewable projects.
The Kumu facility enhances the existing renewable energy framework, partnering with the nearby Moco Moco Hydropower Plant and a solar photovoltaic farm to create a total capacity of 3.2 MW. Notably, there was a recent achievement where the Kumu and Moco Moco plants supplied Lethem with all of its energy for a full 24-hour period through hydropower alone.
Further plans include constructing a dedicated distribution network to extend electricity to homes and businesses in Kumu Village, allowing residents to tap into the grid’s surplus. The Prime Minister also emphasized the project’s broader impact on sectors such as tourism, education, and healthcare, encouraging local entrepreneurs and enhancing job creation.
The Kumu station is part of a larger dual hydropower project, under a budget-conscious contract aimed at timely completion, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable energy development with private sector collaboration.
