Prominent lawyer Murseline Bacchus has passed away at the age of 83, as confirmed by the Guyana Bar Association. Recognized for his exceptional legal skills, he served as a leading criminal attorney in the Berbice region for many years.
Mr. Bacchus was a pioneer among Caribbean law graduates, completing his studies at the University of the West Indies and the Hugh Wooding Law School alongside notable peers, including former DPP and Chief Justice Ian Chang. Their achievements set a standard for future generations of Caribbean lawyers.
In January 2020, Bacchus was appointed Senior Counsel by President David Granger, marking fifty years of his legal career this year. Attorney General Anil Nandlall SC expressed profound sadness at Bacchus’s passing, praising him as a dedicated advocate who supported the Berbice community with remarkable commitment.
Starting his journey as a law clerk, Bacchus excelled after studying at the University of Guyana and further at the University of the West Indies. His expertise in criminal law allowed him to handle numerous significant cases, many of which are documented in legal reports.
Nandlall highlighted Bacchus’s rigorous research methods, noting his reliance on traditional texts rather than digital resources, which enriched the legal proceedings for his clients and colleagues alike. Bacchus was honored as a member of the Inner Bar in December 2020, a testament to his legacy.
The Bar Association and Attorney General extended their deepest sympathies to Bacchus’s family and the legal profession during this time of mourning.
