Prominent figures Ralph Ramkarran and Timothy Jonas have stepped down from the party A New and United Guyana (ANUG) following its merger with the US-sanctioned We Invest in Nationhood (WIN), led by Azruddin Mohamed. This consolidation contradicts earlier statements made by both parties about avoiding a coalition.
On June 28, 2025, an agreement was formalized at WIN’s Head Office, where leaders from both parties signed under the WIN designation in preparation for the upcoming General and Regional Elections. Notably, this ceremony was closed to the media, which typically covers such significant political events, and a press release about the merger was issued at an unusual hour to evade mainstream news coverage.
Both Ramkarran and Jonas publicly confirmed their resignations via social media, signaling a significant shift in their political affiliations during a contentious atmosphere following allegations of corruption linked to Mohamed and his enterprises. In 2024, the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions against Mohamed and his associated businesses due to serious allegations, including tax evasion related to gold exports, which involved the omission of over 10,000 kilograms of gold from official records and the evasion of more than $50 million in duties owed to the Guyanese government.
