The people of Bartica have been given a new lease on life as the $553 million Bartica Stelling, a modern and efficient port facility, was officially opened by President Irfaan Ali. The upgraded gateway promises to transform daily life in Region Seven, supporting tourism, mining, agriculture, and trade.
This state-of-the-art facility is a significant investment in Guyana’s economic transformation, as highlighted by the President during the commissioning ceremony. ‘This project is part of our broader vision to modernize Guyana’s waterfront infrastructure,’ he said. ‘It will integrate our transport systems and create opportunities for prosperity.’
The journey to this milestone was not without its challenges. The first phase encountered several setbacks, including delays and complaints about the quality of work. However, under President Ali’s leadership, the project was advanced, ensuring value for money while meeting satisfactory standards.
The Bartica Stelling upgrade is part of the government’s ongoing programme to modernize ports across Guyana. Similar works are planned or underway in other locations, including Parika, Vreed-en-Hoop, Supenaam, and Port Kaituma. As Mayor Anthony Murray described it, this commissioning marks a ‘historic moment’ for Bartica, promising improved access, enhanced safety, reduced costs, and new market opportunities.
