The Government of Guyana is embarking on a massive project to transform two of its most iconic commercial hubs, Stabroek Market and Bourda Market, into vibrant and sustainable spaces that cater to the needs of both vendors and shoppers.
Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag, highlighted the importance of markets as social centers that unite communities and provide essential services. The upgrades aim to preserve the historic features of these markets while creating a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment.
The Stabroek Market, known for its iconic clock tower, will see improvements in sanitation facilities, including the completion of 30 modern washrooms for vendors and shoppers. A comprehensive design plan, developed in partnership with the King’s Foundation, will also ensure that green spaces are incorporated into the city, promoting healthy lifestyles and safe spaces for families.
Bourda Market, one of Georgetown’s busiest trading spots, is set to undergo a major transformation. The centerpiece of the plan is the construction of a modern two-storey building to accommodate vendors, offering improved facilities and better customer experiences.
The improvements are part of a larger urban revitalization plan inspired by President Ali and Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo’s vision for Georgetown as a vibrant, family-friendly city where commerce, heritage, and green spaces co-exist harmoniously.
Minister Parag assured that the redesign of Stabroek Market will not compromise its cultural and historical identity, and that the long-term goal is to ensure the area is consistently clean, well-structured, and able to function as both a commercial and cultural hub.
