The government has announced plans to clear and level parapets across Georgetown as part of its efforts to improve the city’s drainage and infrastructure. This initiative is part of a comprehensive plan aimed at tackling long-standing issues and preparing the city for future growth.
President Dr Irfaan Ali led a meeting with a multi-agency team, which has developed a Georgetown Drainage Development Plan. The plan aims to deliver short-term and medium-term improvements, including upgrades to drainage systems, roads, and public spaces.
The government is also investing in modernizing the sewerage system, with Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) engaged to design and construct a new treatment facility. This initiative will be followed by community consultations across several areas of the city.
President Ali emphasized the importance of resident cooperation and highlighted the plans for suburban and rural communities, which include Hope-like canal projects and the installation of new pump stations.
The government has been investing heavily in infrastructure projects over the past five years, including upgrades to drainage systems, roads, and public spaces. These efforts are part of a broader national strategy for sustainable urban development.
