Guyana’s healthcare system is undergoing significant changes, as Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony shared during the recent Cardiology Symposium at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre. He highlighted the considerable advancements in health facilities, which have been prioritized to address chronic diseases and improve overall service delivery.
Dr. Anthony noted the impressive scale of their initiatives, mentioning the establishment of over 400 health facilities across the nation. In the last three years alone, significant investments—costing billions—have led to the construction of 25 new health centres and hospitals in diverse regions.
The focus on modernizing healthcare extends to remote areas, with ongoing projects including a new hospital in Moruca and facilities in Kato and Lethem. These developments are designed to ensure that rural populations receive high-quality services, equipped with advanced technology like CT scans.
As part of a strategic approach to combat chronic illnesses, particularly heart disease, the government is adopting the HEARTS protocol from the World Health Organization, promoting effective medication, lifestyle changes, and enhanced patient management. The program is currently active at 201 sites, aiming to support nearly 4,000 patients and reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.
