U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have apprehended a Russian national reportedly affiliated with Al Qaeda, underscoring the agency’s ongoing commitment to national security. The 39-year-old man, born in Tajikistan, was detained on May 23, 2023, as part of an investigation into threats against public safety. This operation was bolstered by collaboration with the FBI, aiming to enhance community safety.
Initially intercepted at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California in March 2023, he was charged with being an inadmissible alien due to lack of an immigrant visa. Following a notice to appear before an immigration judge, he was paroled into the U.S. However, officials in Tajikistan soon labeled him a fugitive, leading to his subsequent detention.
ICE has made it clear that the safety of American citizens is paramount, with the Philadelphia Field Office Director Brian McShane emphasizing the resolve to remove individuals associated with terrorism from the country. Currently held in ICE custody, the Russian national faces removal proceedings as investigations into his alleged ties to Al Qaeda continue.
