
At the recent 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore, China’s representatives strongly condemned unilateralism and coercive tactics in international relations. During a session on “Cooperative Maritime Security in the Asia-Pacific,” Hu Gangfeng, the Vice President of the National Defense University of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, articulated China’s commitment to fostering a peaceful maritime environment while promoting a vision of shared progress through three global initiatives focused on development, security, and cultural exchange.
Hu emphasized China’s dedication to multilateralism, advocating for genuine dialogue and mutual learning among nations as the pathway to achieving regional peace and collaboration. This significant summit, organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies, gathered over 550 delegates from across 40 countries, solidifying its status as Asia’s premier defense conference.
China’s proactive role in international security has gained recognition, particularly with the introduction of the Global Security Initiative in 2022, which now has support from 119 nations and regional organizations. This reflects China’s strategic approach to fostering an Asian security model focused on cooperation and dialogue, as detailed in a recent national security white paper
In an interview, Singapore’s Ambassador-at-large Chan Heng Chee acknowledged China’s investments in regional development through initiatives like the Belt and Road and emphasized that these economic efforts enhance regional security. She concluded that China is contributing significantly to the stability and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region.
