The Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands suggests that Shetland could stimulate economic growth and rejuvenate its communities by adopting a similar approach to his country, which has successfully swapped outdated ferries for undersea tunnels. The Shetland Islands Council is advancing its plans to construct tunnels linking several remote islands, including Unst, the UK’s northernmost location.
Aksel Johannesen shared insights with BBC News, emphasizing that investing in infrastructure is wise and beneficial. The projected multi-million pound tunnel initiative is expected to be financed through loans, with repayment facilitated by tolls, potentially setting a precedent for other Scottish islands.
Critiques have emerged, notably from Anne Anderson of Scottish Sea Farms, expressing frustration over the lack of progress in Scotland compared to the Faroes, which have been constructing tunnels since the 1960s. She highlighted the decline of the Scottish salmon market share due to insufficient infrastructure investment and urged the UK to take heed of the Faroese model, advocating for direct emulation of their strategies.
The Faroese archipelago, with 18 islands connected by 23 tunnels, boasts remarkable infrastructure, including the world’s only undersea roundabout, significantly enhancing connectivity and economic vitality. Industry experts believe that Shetland possesses the potential to replicate such success, with technical guidance and innovative tunneling methods available for the ambitious project ahead.
While the prospect of improved infrastructure is promising, discussions surrounding the financial implications and prioritization of resources continue to evoke debate among residents.
