After a two-year hiatus, the GFF Elite League is finally returning to the National Track and Field Centre in Leonora, where Slingerz FC’s Head Coach, Jamaal Shabazz, anticipates a revitalizing weekend for the West Demerara community.
Slingerz FC, currently leading the league with an unbeaten record, will defend their status in the main event against second-placed Western Tigers on Sunday night at 9:00 PM. The evening’s action kicks off at 7:00 PM with Den Amstel squaring off against Mainstay Goldstar, who are struggling at the bottom of the table.
Shabazz remarked, “This is what football embodies,” commending the efforts of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., for facilitating the return of premier football to such a notable venue in Guyana.
Sunday’s match will also be Slingerz FC’s first home game since returning to the Elite League last season. Shabazz expressed optimism that this engagement will foster community support and reignite the local football atmosphere.
With Slingerz having previously defeated Western Tigers 3-1 in their first match, the stakes are high for both sides as Slingerz aims to extend their lead, while Western Tigers seeks to challenge for the top spot.
For Den Amstel, victory is crucial to escape possible relegation, while Mainstay Goldstar is desperate for their inaugural points of the season after a dismal record of goals conceded.
