Amid growing turmoil within the opposition, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), accused the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and Alliance for Change (AFC) of engaging in a self-serving political cycle, prioritizing positions over policies. During a press conference at Freedom House in Georgetown, Jagdeo addressed the recent disarray plaguing the opposition.
The AFC has been particularly unstable, plagued by political infighting, defections, and failed coalition discussions, culminating in MP Amanza Walton-Desir departing to establish her own movement. With impending General and Regional Elections on September 1, the opposition is grappling with uncertainty regarding its future.
Jagdeo criticized the opposition for focusing on opportunism rather than presenting a united vision, highlighting their struggles to maintain a coherent narrative amid their public disagreements. He specifically noted the AFC’s desperate attempts to ally with the APNU, despite their previous rejection of the leader, Aubrey Norton.
He characterized the opposition’s strategy as merely recycling existing members rather than attracting new supporters. Jagdeo asserted that the PPP, in contrast, is committed to development-oriented policies, a fact underscored by their recent success in the Local Government Elections.
Ultimately, he stated that the PPP is ready to lead, emphasizing that their focus is on engaging citizens with a transformative vision for the country’s future, while the opposition remains mired in confusion.
