Pennsylvania officials have announced intermittent issues affecting the statewide 911 service. The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) issued an alert emphasizing that, while problems were noted starting around 2 p.m. on Friday, the situation was not constant. Individuals experiencing difficulties with 911 calls are advised to reach out to their local 911 centers via non-emergency lines and to monitor their county’s social media for updates.
PAC director Randy Padfield highlighted that PEMA is actively investigating the cause of these call failures and has established communication channels among public safety answering points. A precautionary Wireless Emergency Alert was disseminated to inform the public of the ongoing disruptions.
While most calls are successfully going through, Padfield has encouraged residents to use alternative seven-digit administrative lines if they can’t connect to 911 and to refrain from testing the system as those calls are considered abandoned and require investigation.
Governor Josh Shapiro reassured residents via social media that officials are diligently working to restore full 911 services promptly. He urged the public to remain calm, adhere to PEMA’s instructions, and reserve 911 calls for genuine emergencies only.
Despite this anomaly, Padfield noted that the Next Gen 911 system has proven to handle heavy call volumes effectively during severe weather events, indicating a strong reliability under normal circumstances.
