Godzilla returns in a visually striking sequel packed with surprises
The Japanese franchise’s latest revival follows the success of 2023’s Godzilla Minus One, continuing a long-running exchange between Toho’s films and Hollywood’s Monsterverse.
The success of Godzilla Minus One in 2023 demonstrated that audiences still have an appetite for Japan’s iconic giant monster. Its follow-up, Godzilla Minus Zero, is described as visually striking and full of unexpected turns, extending a modern revival of the long-running franchise.
That revival has unfolded alongside Hollywood’s own take on the kaiju. Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse has brought Godzilla together with King Kong, while Japan’s Toho has separately refreshed the property that first gave the creature life.
Godzilla Minus One was directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also wrote the screenplay. The film’s commercial success set the stage for the new sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero.
