Alexander Zverev Confirmed Year-End No. 1 Ranking Following Alcaraz's Defeat 1 Ranking Following Carlos Alcaraz's Shanghai Masters Defeat
According to the South China Morning Post, Alexander Zverev concluded the year as the ATP's top-ranked player after Carlos Alcaraz was defeated by unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs in the Shanghai Masters round of 32.
The South China Morning Post reported that Alexander Zverev, who has won two slams this season, was confirmed as the first German player to finish the year as the ATP's number one, a position aided by the absence of Jannik Sinner.
Carlos Alcaraz, a seven-time grand slam champion, experienced a surprising loss to the unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs in the round of 32 at the Shanghai Masters on Monday, with the score being 7-5, 7-6. This result also confirmed Alexander Zverev as the year-end world No. 1 in the ATP rankings.
Alcaraz, who had recently defended his Japan Open title against Czech Jiri Lehecka and was gaining momentum after a significant wrist injury layoff, struggled to find his rhythm in a scrappy two-hour, two-minute contest.
The second-seeded Spaniard had been out of competition for nearly five months before making a return at the US Open in late August, where he reached the quarter-finals. Alcaraz was among the players who did not advance at the ATP Masters 1000 event, alongside 24-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic and US Open runner-up Ben Shelton.
