According to the South China Morning Post, analysts suggest that the spread of viral falsehoods regarding foreign crime is contributing to political division in a country that is in need of workers. This pattern is reportedly deepening societal divisions within Japan and establishing a feedback loop that experts believe will be challenging to break.
In August, Constella Security Japan, a cybersecurity firm located in Tokyo that was commissioned by the government to combat online disinformation, held a webinar for media and officials concerning fake news directed at foreign residents.
Cases brought to light included viral social media clips with titles such as “metal theft by foreigners” and “stealing metal from railway tracks,” which purported to show migrants severing railway cables. Kyodo News reported that these videos had accumulated approximately 4.3 million views across different platforms by the middle of September.
