Andy Burnham Defends Gogglebox Appearance Amid Kemi Badenoch's Criticism
Prime Minister Andy Burnham defended his decision to appear on a celebrity episode of Channel 4's Gogglebox, which supports Stand Up To Cancer, following criticism from Kemi Badenoch.
According to BBC UK, Prime Minister Andy Burnham defended his decision to feature in a celebrity episode of the Channel 4 program Gogglebox after opposition leader Kemi Badenoch expressed surprise that he had the time to participate.
Badenoch told BBC Breakfast that 'even as a junior minister or as a secretary of state, I never had time to go on Gogglebox' and it 'takes hours to do'. Her comments came in response to the announcement that Burnham was part of the lineup for a celebrity episode of the show benefiting Stand Up To Cancer, which is scheduled to air at a later time.
Burnham asserted that he is proud to support Stand Up To Cancer and stated that he makes no excuses for attempting to lead with a degree of lightness and humor, which he described as his natural manner of approaching things. The special Gogglebox edition airs on Channel 4 at 21:05 BST.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Burnham mentioned that supporting Stand Up To Cancer through the recurring charity special on Gogglebox is an annual event. He and Steve Rotheram expressed pride in participating, with Burnham adding that he is attempting to provide some hope to the country and county, as this aligns with his usual approach. He acknowledged that his participation in Gogglebox might not appeal to everyone, emphasizing that it is Stand Up To Cancer night and he has always been committed to the fight against cancer.
Conversely, Kemi Badenoch stated that appearing on the program was not something she typically did. She expressed amazement that Andy Burnham possessed the time for Gogglebox, noting that when taking on a new political role, there is a significant amount to manage, which she likened to drinking from a fire hose. She reiterated that she never had time for Gogglebox even as a junior minister or secretary of state.
Describing Burnham as being active on social media throughout the day, Badenoch suggested she could do the same but would be unable to fulfill her duties as leader of the opposition. She concluded by stating that her role is to hold him accountable, and she had never observed a prime minister who had the time for the level of Goggleboxing, social media, and Lad Bible that Burnham appeared to engage in.
