Banks Exercise Caution on Mortgages for Luxury Hong Kong Development Amid Defect Allegations
The South China Morning Post reports that banks are adopting a cautious stance regarding mortgages for the luxury Hong Kong development, One Stanley, due to ongoing allegations of construction defects, which may impact the super-prime property market.
According to the South China Morning Post, banks are approaching mortgages associated with the luxury Hong Kong development, One Stanley, with caution because the property is facing allegations concerning building defects. This controversy surrounding alleged construction issues at One Stanley is reportedly threatening to cast a shadow over Hong Kong's recovering super-prime property market, as banks are pausing mortgage activities and property agents have halted viewings at the complex pending the continuation of an investigation.
Eric Tso Tak-ming, chief vice-president at mReferral Mortgage Brokerage Services, stated that most banks are currently adopting a wait-and-see attitude, suggesting that lenders are likely to take a more reserved stance toward mortgage applications at the development while the investigation is active. A source within the banking industry indicated that loan approvals would be evaluated on an individual basis, noting that lenders would examine whether prospective buyers possessed high net worth or were otherwise deemed dependable clients.
An anonymous property agent managing sales at One Stanley mentioned that their firm had suspended viewings at the development unless clients specifically requested a visit.
