Canada Will Not Change Its Push to Reduce Economic Dependence on the US After Trump's Republican Party Suffered a Crushing Midterm Election Defeat
An official stated that Canada's objective to lessen its economic reliance on the United States will remain unchanged following the significant midterm election loss experienced by Donald Trump's Republican Party, and that trade negotiations will still be held with Trump's White House and not the incoming Democratic-controlled Congress.
According to the South China Morning Post, an official indicated on Wednesday that Canada's initiative to decrease its economic dependence on the United States will persist, even after the Republican Party, led by Donald Trump, experienced a decisive defeat in the midterm elections. Trade negotiations will still be held with Trump’s White House and not the incoming Democratic-controlled Congress.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has asserted that trade with the US, which forms a fundamental part of the Canadian economy, will not revert to a state prior to the Trump administration, and that Canada has an urgent need to diversify its trade partnerships.
Furthermore, leaders of the US Democratic Party have voiced criticism regarding the trade conflict initiated by Trump against Canada, advocating for the removal of extensive tariffs that have impacted businesses on both sides of the border.
Regarding trade discussions, it was noted that negotiations will continue to take place with the Trump White House rather than with the Congress that is expected to be controlled by Democrats.
