According to the South China Morning Post, a surprise trade agreement emerged from weeks of delicate negotiations between China and the European Union, which includes imposing strict quotas on Chinese hybrid car exports to the bloc and decreasing Chinese tariffs on a range of European goods.

The deal, which was announced on Friday, is reported to ease some of the intense bilateral trade tensions and temporarily prevent the possibility of a significant trade war.

Beijing consented not to retaliate against the European Union's action to limit imports of Chinese hybrid cars, which will restrict shipments to a cap of 350,000 units each year, with an annual increase of 6 per cent. This cap means that exports will account for less than half of the 800,000 vehicles that the EU had projected would be shipped in 2026.

When questioned on Monday about how Beijing accepted these concessions, following weeks of Chinese officials rejecting the idea of voluntarily limiting auto shipments, Brussels stated its stance using the common business phrase, "The customer is always right."

EU officials mentioned a "paradigm shift" following the unexpected trade deal, noting that the "nature of the rebalancing exercise has changed."
