China's Efforts to Curb Scam Operations in Myanmar Highlight Cross-Border Crime Issues
A three-part documentary, co-produced by China's Ministry of Public Security and CCTV, details the challenges Chinese authorities encountered while addressing criminal networks and scam groups operating in northern Myanmar. The report indicates that 80 per cent of telecoms and online fraud targeting Chinese citizens occurred abroad, with northern Myanmar being a major location.
According to the South China Morning Post, a three-part documentary, which was jointly produced by China’s Ministry of Public Security and the state broadcaster CCTV, has begun airing on Monday. This series illustrates the difficulties faced by Chinese authorities in dealing with criminal syndicates and scam groups that are operating in northern Myanmar across the border. The documentary also outlines how joint operations have led to the dismantling of major border compounds, while warning that criminal syndicates are reportedly moving closer to Thailand.
Telecom and online scams emerged as a significant issue within China during the 2010s, a situation exacerbated by the proliferation of mobile phones, the internet, and online payment systems. The documentary stated that 80 per cent of the telecoms and online fraud crimes that targeted Chinese nationals were committed outside of China, with northern Myanmar representing a considerable portion of those activities.
