China's Regulator Pushes for Live-Action Dramas Amid AI's Impact on Microdrama Industry
China's broadcasting regulator is advocating for increased backing for live-action dramas as the government aims to guide the flourishing microdrama sector toward superior production standards and stricter rights protections due to the swift advancement of AI.
According to the South China Morning Post, China's broadcasting regulator has requested more support for live-action dramas. This initiative comes as the government endeavors to direct the rapidly growing microdrama industry toward higher quality output and more stringent safeguards regarding rights, all while navigating the swift ascent of artificial intelligence.
Wang Xiaoliang, who leads the National Radio and Television Administration's department overseeing online audiovisual content, stated that while AI has introduced new possibilities for innovation and production within microdramas, it has also brought forth difficulties concerning content quality and the protection of rights.
Wang asserted that in response to this emerging challenge, the administration's stance is unambiguous: live-action dramas should receive robust support because they represent the core of high-quality production. The South China Morning Post also noted that AI has rapidly increased the scope and efficiency of microdrama creation in China, simultaneously heightening worries about copyright and increasing the strain on human creators.
