Chinese Foreign Ministry Sanctions Paraguayan and Belizean Ministers Over Taiwan Ties
The Chinese foreign ministry has imposed sanctions on Gustavo Villate of Paraguay and Francis Fonseca of Belize, accusing them of supporting 'diplomatic ties' with Taiwan for personal gain.
According to the South China Morning Post, the Chinese foreign ministry announced sanctions on Monday against Gustavo Villate, who serves as Paraguay’s minister of information and communication technologies, and Francis Fonseca, who is Belize’s minister of foreign affairs, foreign trade, education, culture, science and technology.
The measures enacted include freezing the assets of both ministers located within China, barring Chinese individuals and entities from engaging in transactions or cooperation with the pair, and denying them entry into China, which also extends to Hong Kong and Macau.
The foreign ministry stated in two separate announcements on Monday morning that the two ministers were accused of persistently backing what it termed 'diplomatic ties' with the region of Taiwan, allegedly motivated by 'self-interest' over recent years.
Separately, the South China Morning Post reported that Belize entered into a diplomatic training agreement with Taipei this year, and Paraguay initiated a data centre investment project.
