Concern Raised Over Foreign Ideological Conflicts Threatening Guyanese Mutual Respect
A letter published in Kaieteur News on November 7, 2026, warns that divisive content originating from various international sources is threatening the established tradition of mutual respect within Guyanese communities.
According to a letter published in Kaieteur News on November 7, 2026, Ray Chickrie expressed concern regarding a growing trend within online Guyanese communities and Facebook groups that he believes endangers the social fabric of the nation. Chickrie noted that posts promoting religious fearmongering, bigotry, and anti-Muslim hatred are frequently shared across popular Guyanese Facebook pages and diaspora forums. He stated that much of this material, which is often reposted without examination, originates from coordinated political and ideological agendas located in the United States, India, Israel, Russia, and other places.
Chickrie cautioned that when Guyanese users share these divisive posts, they inadvertently become tools in someone else's political conflict. He emphasized that a significant strength of Guyana, both domestically and among the diaspora, has historically been its interfaith harmony, noting that Hindus, Muslims, and Christians have coexisted, shared joys, respected places of worship, celebrated holidays, and supported one another as a single people for generations.
He asserted that the tradition of mutual respect must not be allowed to be eroded by foreign ideological conflicts, and that the community should not adopt hatred manufactured by international propaganda and algorithms. Chickrie also mentioned that Islamic organizations in Guyana appear increasingly preoccupied and unaware of these developments, which he characterized as selective amnesia. He urged Guyanese individuals, particularly social media users and group administrators, to employ critical thinking.
