Critique of GHK Lall's Column: Analysis Claims Piece Lacks Empirical Evidence
A letter published in Kaieteur News critiques GHK Lall's column, "EPA Director, Parsram," asserting that the piece relies heavily on stylistic filler, sarcasm, and unverified speculation rather than verifiable facts to support its accusations.
In a letter published in Kaieteur News on October 21, 2026, Hargesh B. Singh offered an analytical evaluation of GHK Lall’s column titled “EPA Director, Parsram.” Singh stated that approximately 75% of the 650-word column consists of stylistic filler, sarcasm, and theatrical commentary instead of core factual information, characterizing it as lacking evidence.
Singh contended that from both a logical and journalistic standpoint, the article is entirely devoid of empirical or verifiable evidence to back its severe accusations, suggesting the piece falls under speculative political commentary rather than investigative reporting.
According to the letter, Lall is basing his arguments on 'Unverified Assertions and Speculation,' as he speculatively alleges corrupt "arrangements with political gatekeepers" and asserts that the Environmental Assessment Board (EAB) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) operate merely as a "rubber stamp." Singh noted that Lall provided no specific documents, transactions, dates, recorded instances, or witnesses to substantiate these claims of backroom dealings.
Furthermore, Singh pointed out that Lall frequently employs cliched Rhetorical Questions instead of presenting facts. He mentioned that Lall used loaded questions, such as "When has the EAB gone against Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency?" Singh argued that, based on basic logic, a loaded question cannot serve as a substitute for empirical evidence.
Finally, Singh observed that GHK Lall insinuates 'Guilt by Association' by referencing a past event involving a judge, specifically "The Justice Gino Persaud development," as a warning to current officials. Singh claimed that Lall used this past situation to imply how current officials might behave, instead of presenting actual proof of contemporary wrongdoing concerning the uranium project.
Singh concluded that the column functions as a rhetorical argument built on a systemic assumption, as the author views every action by the EPA Director through a lens of sarcasm, cynicism, and hyperbole, rather than providing an evidence-based report. The letter stated that the article serves as little more than a self-indulgent exercise for the author.
