Democratic Congressional Takeover Could Intensify Scrutiny of Trump's China Policy
Analysts suggest that a Democratic majority in either chamber of the US Congress might lead to increased examination of President Donald Trump's interactions with Beijing, despite expected continued hawkish sentiment toward China among lawmakers.
According to analysts cited by the South China Morning Post, a shift in control to the Democratic Party in either house of the US Congress could result in more rigorous examination of President Donald Trump's dealings with Beijing, even if legislators are anticipated to largely maintain a hawkish posture toward China.
Sarah Trister, who previously served as a lead staff member on the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee focusing on East Asia and the Pacific, stated that a change in control might alter the focus of congressional oversight. She indicated that the Democratic Party might pursue greater accountability regarding the administration's China policy, especially since the Republican Party largely allowed President Trump latitude in his approach.
Trister also noted that she would not anticipate that congressional Democrats would attempt to completely redefine the relationship with China.
