Diesel sets UK record after 59p-a-litre rise since late February

The RAC puts UK diesel at 199.18p per litre, just 0.09p above its previous June 2022 record. BBC UK reports the price has risen 59p since the conflict between the USA and Iran began at the end of February. The UK makes enough petrol to meet demand but relies heavily on imports for diesel.

BBC UK reports that the RAC’s diesel price of 199.18p per litre is 0.09p above the previous record of 199.09p, set in June 2022. The margin over that old high is small compared with the 59p-per-litre rise since the conflict between the USA and Iran erupted at the end of February; the increase is just under 40%. Filling an average family car with diesel now costs £110, £31 more than at the start of the conflict.

The fuel comparison also reflects a difference in UK supply. Petrol costs 174.13p per litre, 41p more than at the conflict’s start, but remains below its 2022 peak. The BBC says the UK’s four refineries produce more than enough petrol to meet demand, but not enough diesel, leaving the country heavily reliant on diesel imports. International flows of crude oil and refined diesel have been restricted by the conflict, while Russia has also imposed a diesel export ban following attacks on its refineries by Ukraine.
