Doubts Raised Over MV Barima Salvage Operation and Evidence Preservation
A letter published in Kaieteur News expresses doubt among Guyanese citizens regarding the successful salvage of the MV Barima and the preservation of evidence for inquiry, citing concerns over the process over the past 111 days.
According to a letter to the Editor published by Kaieteur News on November 07, 2026, individuals in Guyana, particularly those impacted by the sinking of the MV Barima, have reasons to question whether the steamer will be salvaged while retaining credible evidence for the inquiry.
Following the sinking, those tasked with the salvage agreed that the operation needed to proceed with minimal delay. The commitment made was to prevent further issues arising from sediment accumulation in every part of the vessel and from the structural weakening caused by saltwater. The assurance provided was that the evidence would be maintained.
Faiyaz Alli stated that the actions taken during the 111 days of salvage work have not fostered hope that the boat will be recovered with all evidence preserved. Furthermore, the hiring of a 66-year-old diver, without comprehensive health screenings or backup support, suggests that the salvage operation is not receiving the highest level of attention to detail that the project warrants. Affected families continue to hold onto hope.
While the contractor has agreed to forgo payment due to the failure to recover and preserve evidence, Alli noted that there may still be alternative avenues for compensation for the contractor.
