According to the South China Morning Post, the Asian Film Awards Academy hosted 16 emerging filmmakers from across Asia at its 2026 International Film Camp in Macau. This gathering highlights a subtle shift within Asian cinema, as a new group of storytellers is reportedly moving away from the sweeping historical epics and polished commercial blockbusters that have previously characterized the region's film exports.

These young directors are reportedly forging a different trajectory, choosing to focus on the intimate, the unspoken, and marginalized subjects, which they perceive as being more representative of modern life and more grounded.

Four filmmakers who participated in this year's International Film Camp include Nadia Chui and Law Yik-man from Hong Kong, Bo Hanxiong from mainland China, and Jonathan Chan Chon-sin from Macau. All four are noted as being in their twenties or early thirties.

The camp, which took place from September 18 to 22, 2026, at The Londoner Macao, was established in 2024. It is intended to offer mentorship, masterclasses, and networking opportunities to assist young directors in advancing and launching their careers. The camp is supported by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of Hong Kong, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macau, and Sands China.
