According to the South China Morning Post, Erik Yeung, who founded the Esports Association of Hong Kong (ESAHK), is hopeful that a combination of evolving public views, achievements at the Asian Games, and a broader pool of talent can support the ongoing development of the gaming sector in Hong Kong.

Competitive gaming has emerged as a significant growth area across Asia, becoming an official medal event at the Asian Games in 2023, and it was featured again in Japan recently. China led the competitions, securing seven gold medals across the two events.

At the Games held in Nagoya this year, China earned three of those gold medals, while Hong Kong also managed to secure bronze medals in the Honor of Kings competition and the Fighting Games Team event, which included Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and KOF XV.

Esports has increasingly become a mainstream offering in recent years. Furthermore, the city's inaugural "M" Mark esports event, Blast Premier Rivals Hong Kong, completely sold out the AsiaWorld-Expo arena last November, drawing over 30,000 attendees over the course of three days.
