European Parliament Adopts Significantly Tougher Stance on China Despite Beijing Lobbying
The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to adopt a report taking a much stronger stance against China, despite persistent lobbying from Beijing to soften the official position. The chamber characterized Beijing as a "decisive enabler" of Russia and called for increased naval activity near the Taiwan Strait.
According to the South China Morning Post, the European Parliament voted on Wednesday to adopt a report that adopts a significantly tougher position toward China, even though Beijing has engaged in sustained and strong lobbying efforts to moderate the official stance.
The legislative body supported more robust measures against Beijing, asserting that China acts as a "decisive enabler" of Russia. Furthermore, the Parliament called for the implementation of a "continuous [European] naval presence and joint exercises" within and around the Taiwan Strait, while also urging prompt action to counter Beijing's industrial policy, which the report described as an "existential threat to the EU."
Lawmakers approved the report by a landslide on Wednesday. The final tally showed that 454 lawmakers voted in favor, 86 voted against, and 110 abstained.
The South China Morning Post noted that while the report does not directly dictate the European Union's China policy, it assists in solidifying the increasingly firm consensus regarding China that has formed in Brussels since the Parliament last altered its official line in 2023.
