Family Mourns Siti Hasmah After 70-Year Marriage; Tributes Highlight Her Role
Following the passing of Siti Hasmah, who was married to Mahathir for 70 years, her family members have been taking turns staying with him after the burial. A granddaughter shared memories of her great-grandmother, noting her strength and role in keeping the large family together.
According to the South China Morning Post, family members are taking turns staying with former Prime Minister Mahathir subsequent to the burial of his wife of 70 years, amidst numerous tributes. Footage of family members weeping served as a reminder that before she held the title of "Ibu Negara" (Mother of the Nation), she was a mother of seven, a grandmother to 18, and a great-grandmother to four.
Meera Alyanna Mukhriz, known as Ally, is the granddaughter whose latest great-grandchild, Eden Zakaria, was born last month. In a social media post on Monday, Ally paid tribute to her tok (grandparent), describing her as gentle yet strong, lenient yet firm, and the element that maintained closeness within their large family.
Ally mentioned that bringing Eden into the world was challenging but worthwhile because he had the chance to meet his wonderful nyang (great-grandmother). Ally recounted that just two weeks prior to her passing, she saw the front door open and it was her tok, who arrived without prior notice to see them and her great-grandchild, Eden. Ally noted that her great-grandmother would have spent the entire day holding him and provided numerous pieces of advice to her great-granddaughter. Specifically, she mentioned that her great-grandmother repeatedly asked, "Ally, no pillows in his crib OK?" and offered many tips to her great-granddaughter. Ally expressed a wish that Eden had been able to spend more time with his great-grandmother, despite the privilege of having her for 100 years.
