Former Legco President Suggestion to Review Number of Seats to Manage Public Funds
The first Legislative Council president of Hong Kong since the 1997 handover, Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai, has proposed reviewing the number of seats in the Legislative Council (Legco) to ensure public funds are utilized appropriately.
Based on reporting by South China Morning Post:
Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai, who holds the position of the first Legco president following Hong Kong's return to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, has put forward the idea of re-evaluating the number of seats in the Legco, citing the necessity of proper use of public funds. A friend of hers has often remarked that keeping 90 seats costs a lot more than 60, and she somewhat agrees with this. Fan stated during an appearance on a radio program, when questioned by the host about whether the current 90 seats in the Legco were excessive, that a friend of hers has often remarked that maintaining 90 seats incurs significantly higher costs than maintaining 60 seats, a sentiment with which she somewhat concurs. Furthermore, Fan mentioned on Sunday that authorities in Hong Kong and Shenzhen had previously discussed a development project on a plot situated at the border between the two cities prior to the 1997 handover, but this plan did not proceed due to internal opposition within the government.
