Guyana Defence Force Marks 61st Anniversary with Focus on Modernization and Readiness
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) commenced its 61st anniversary celebrations with an inter-faith service at Base Camp Ayanganna, where the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, emphasized the necessity of modernization, operational readiness, and professionalism to address evolving security challenges.
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) initiated its 61st anniversary commemorations with an inter-faith service held at the auditorium of Base Camp Ayanganna, according to the Guyana Times. During this service, Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan stressed the importance of operational readiness, professionalism, and modernization as the Force prepares to confront emerging defense and security issues.
The event, which took place on Sunday, gathered senior military personnel, representatives from the Joint Services, members of the diplomatic corps, and other officials. The gathering served as an occasion for reflection on the Force's 61-year history and its duties as it transitions into its 62nd year of service.
In his address, Brigadier Khan acknowledged the accomplishments of the GDF since its inception, offering recognition to the veterans and pioneers whose efforts established the Force. He also acknowledged the sacrifices made by military families who support the serving ranks and officers. Furthermore, he reiterated the GDF's dual mandate, which involves defending Guyana's sovereignty and territorial integrity while contributing to national development.
Looking forward, the Chief of Defence Staff highlighted the ongoing requirement for the Force to adapt and modernize in response to shifting security threats. He urged officers and ranks to uphold high standards of integrity, patriotism, and professionalism, noting that the GDF's capacity to fulfill its mandate relies on the conduct and competence of its personnel.
The service also provided a moment for Force members to express gratitude for divine protection throughout its history and to seek continued blessings for its upcoming year of national service. The sermon centered on the connection between duty and faith, referencing Isaiah 6:8, which states, “Here am I; send me.” This biblical passage was used to illustrate the willingness to respond to a call to service, drawing parallels between the prophet's commitment and the responsibility of military personnel to serve their nation with courage and dedication.
A Colour Party, led by Colour Ensign Lieutenant Delmar Headley with Warrant Officer Class Two Mirza Shah as Colour Warrant Officer, was also part of the proceedings. Staff Sergeant Jamal Johnson and Senior Petty Officer Paul David served as Colour Escorts.
The anniversary observances coincide with the GDF entering its 62nd year, with expectations that the Force will build upon the experiences and sacrifices of past generations while enhancing its capability to manage current and future defense challenges. The GDF stated that the occasion reinforced the commitment to maintaining a professionally developed and operationally prepared Force capable of protecting Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while executing its broader defense and security responsibilities.
Attendees included Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), Colonel Sheldon Howell; Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot; Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham; and Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean, Commander of Regional Division 4’A. The GDF's senior leadership was represented by Colonel General Staff Colonel Kenlloyd Roberts, Adjutant General Colonel Lloyd Souvenir, Colonel Administration and Quartering Commander Roger Nurse, and Inspector General Colonel Natasha Stanford-Francis. Also present were Colombian Liaison Officer Colonel Rodrigo Mezú and Brazilian Military Attaché to Guyana Colonel Luciano De Oliveira, alongside other senior GDF officers and former Defence Military Attaché Colonel (Ret’d) Julius Skeete.
