Guyana Reports 19% Fewer Road Accidents, but Fatal Accidents Fall by One
Traffic Chief Mahindra Singh reported 83 fatal accidents and 89 deaths so far in 2026, compared with 84 fatal accidents and 93 deaths at the same point last year. The figures also show differing trends in factors linked to fatal crashes: speeding-attributed fatal accidents declined, while deaths attributed to inattentiveness and pedestrian-crossing fatalities rose.
Guyana Times reported that Traffic Chief Assistant Commissioner of Police Mahindra Singh said road accidents across all categories were down 19% so far in 2026. The change in fatal accidents was much smaller: 83 so far this year, compared with 84 at the corresponding point last year. Deaths fell from 93 to 89, and child deaths from five to two.
The figures Singh provided for factors associated with fatal crashes moved in different directions, and measure different outcomes. Fatal accidents attributed to speeding declined from 70 last year to 65 this year. By contrast, deaths attributed to inattentiveness rose from nine to 14, while pedestrian-crossing fatalities increased from four to five.
Singh attributed some movement in the overall figures to road-safety education and public awareness. He also described consistent enforcement, technology and data-based deployment of traffic ranks as parts of the Police Force’s approach; the reported figures do not establish those measures as the cause of the changes.
