HKU Seeks Northern Metropolis Space to Boost Research and Attract Talent
The University of Hong Kong is seeking additional laboratory space within the Northern Metropolis university town to enhance its research capabilities and draw in talent, according to its new research vice-president.
Based on reporting by South China Morning Post:
The University of Hong Kong (HKU) is aiming to obtain more laboratory facilities in the Northern Metropolis university town to increase its research capacity and attract skilled individuals, stated Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, the university's new vice-president for research.
Professor Shum, who assumed the vice presidency in August, also requested increased government financial support, noting that the process for grant applications can be lengthy and the resulting returns on investment might be gradual.
Shum indicated that the university's advancements in research would correspond with the government's focus on merging education, technology, industry, and talent to accelerate the growth of the Northern Metropolis, as detailed in the policy address.
He outlined a closed-loop strategy designed to transition discoveries from the laboratory into industry and subsequently back into research. This strategy involves top talent leading breakthrough research, industry collaborations and startups converting these findings into practical applications, and successful ventures generating new research questions for scientists.
