According to the South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong court has decided to award over HK$89,000 (US$11,340) to an employee who suffered serious injuries from an attack by dogs at a shelter. The court rejected the assertion made by the employer that the worker was merely a volunteer.

District Judge Harold Leong Kwok-on stated on Monday that an employment connection existed between the victim and Kelly Animals Shelter, located in Lau Fau Shan, even without a formal written agreement. The judge noted that the victim received payment, had tasks assigned by the shelter's personnel, and did not oversee the business operations or bear its profits or risks.

The incident occurred around 3pm on November 16, 2022, when the employee was attempting to guide dogs back into their kennels at the shelter. The worker sustained several injuries and was subsequently transported to the accident and emergency department at Tin Shui Wai Hospital.
