Hong Kong forecasts 7.44 million checkpoint trips over National Day break
The South China Morning Post reports that Hong Kong’s 7.44 million forecast counts inbound and outbound trips by Hongkongers and visitors from October 1 to 7. Authorities separately expect 1.29 million mainland visitors. The periods differ too: last year’s 1.4 million mainland visitors arrived during an eight-day holiday that included the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The two forecasts measure different things, according to the South China Morning Post: the Immigration Department expects about 7.44 million passenger trips through Hong Kong’s sea, land and air checkpoints from October 1 to 7, counting inbound and outbound journeys by Hongkongers and visitors. Authorities separately expect 1.29 million mainland visitors over the break.
The visitor estimate also comes against a different holiday period from last year’s comparison. The South China Morning Post reports that last year’s mainland visitor figure reached 1.4 million during an eight-day holiday that included the Mid-Autumn Festival; this year’s National Day break runs for seven days, October 1–7.
For checkpoint operations, the department expects passenger movements to peak this weekend. It anticipates the busiest points will include Lo Wu, the Lok Ma Chau Spur line and Shenzhen Bay, and said service hours at the city’s checkpoints would not be extended.
