Hong Kong Lawmakers Question HK$27 Billion Funding for San Tin Technopole and Wetland Park
Hong Kong lawmakers have expressed apprehension regarding the substantial expense associated with developing a major technology hub and an adjacent wetland park near the border with mainland China, as the government pursues a new funding request of HK$27 billion for the second phase of work.
According to the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong lawmakers have voiced concerns regarding the significant cost involved in developing a flagship technology hub alongside a nearby wetland park situated close to the border with mainland China, as the government is looking to obtain an additional HK$27 billion for the second phase of construction.
During a Legislative Council development panel meeting held on Tuesday, government representatives detailed a proposal amounting to HK$27.2 billion. This proposal encompasses the development of 175 hectares (432 acres) of land within the San Tin Technopole, the establishment of over one-third of the 348-hectare Sam Po Shue Wetland Conservation Park, and the construction of an effluent polishing plant.
This current funding request follows a period of less than two years, as the legislature's finance committee had previously approved HK$27.3 billion in December 2024 to initiate the first stage of operations at the 540-hectare technopole and to design the initial phase of the wetland park.
