Hong Kong Leader Pledges Reforms and Accountability Following Tai Po Fire Inquiry
City leader John Lee stated that Hong Kong authorities have made preparations to implement reforms and pursue accountability before the Tai Po fire inquiry panel's final report is expected later this month.
According to the South China Morning Post, city leader John Lee has committed to pursuing accountability and enacting thorough reforms as soon as possible subsequent to receiving the report from the independent committee.
Lee stated on Tuesday that the government intends to examine and act upon the recommendations put forward by the judge-led independent committee that investigated the fatal fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po last November. He mentioned that specific details regarding these actions would be disclosed once he has received the report.
Prior to the city's top decision-making Executive Council meeting, Lee informed the media that the government has already taken a series of preparatory steps. Furthermore, it has been reported that a specialized task force has been set up under the Public Service Commission. This task force is reportedly headed by former commissioner for sports George Tsoi Kin-pan and former deputy secretary for security Benjamin Mok Kwan-yu, with the aim of investigating alleged official shortcomings connected to the blaze.
