Hong Kong Promotes Foreign Bank Participation in Yuan Trading Infrastructure
The South China Morning Post reports that Hong Kong is actively encouraging international banks to participate in the Central Moneymarkets Unit and a debt securities clearing system as part of efforts to become a major global yuan trading center.
According to the South China Morning Post, the deputy financial secretary stated that Hong Kong is actively promoting various measures to elevate the city's offshore yuan market to greater depths and higher levels.
Michael Wong Wai-lun, the city's deputy financial secretary, made these remarks during a Hong Kong event associated with the Financial Street Forum on Wednesday.
Regarding infrastructure, Wong indicated that the government intends to encourage additional foreign banks operating in Hong Kong to become members of the Central Moneymarkets Unit (CMU). This action is intended to improve the security, efficiency, and resilience of cross-border settlements within the city.
The CMU, which was established in 1990 by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, functions as the city's central securities depository and clearing house for money market instruments and multicurrency bonds.
