Hubble Study of Dwarf Galaxies Reveals Missing Oxygen
NASA's Hubble Space Telescope investigated 37 nearby dwarf galaxies, including NGC 4449, and discovered that a significant amount of expected oxygen was absent from these small galaxies.
According to a release from NASA News Releases on November 2, 2026, the Hubble Space Telescope was utilized to examine 37 dwarf galaxies located nearby. These dwarf galaxies, which are small galaxies containing between a few thousand and hundreds of millions of stars, included NGC 4449, which is classified as a dwarf irregular. The research conducted by the team found that a substantial portion of the oxygen that researchers anticipated observing was not present in these galaxies.
