Items Recovered from Missing Fishing Boat Off Isle of Lewis as Search Continues
Items from a fishing boat that disappeared off the north coast of the Isle of Lewis last week have been recovered, while the search for the vessel and two missing crew members persists. The body of one crew member was also recovered.
According to BBC UK, items belonging to a fishing boat that vanished off the north coast of the Isle of Lewis during the previous week have been recovered, even as the search for the vessel and two missing crew members continues. Norman "Tam" Murray, who is 40, and Murdo Morrison, who is 23, were aboard the Kilda when it went missing on October 13. Rescuers recovered the body of crewmate Douglas Craigie, who was 49, from the sea in the early hours of the subsequent morning.
On Thursday, police confirmed that the vessel's belongings were found in an area described as "an area of interest" near the Port of Ness coast. The search operation involved Police Scotland's marine and dive unit and collaborating partners. A Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) exclusion zone had been established for divers and vessels in the region between the Butt of Lewis and Port of Ness, but this zone is scheduled to be lifted at 23:59 on Thursday.
Insp Neil Taylor, the local area inspector for the Western Isles, stated that the search constituted a "complex operation" and requested that officers be afforded "time and space" to conduct their investigations. He added that efforts are ongoing in collaboration with partners, and they are doing everything possible to obtain answers. Taylor also advised that individuals should not attempt searches in areas that could pose a risk of harm to them, even as the MAIB exclusion zone is lifted tonight.
Separately, a GoFundMe campaign established for the families impacted by this incident has amassed over £148,000, exceeding its initial goal of £110,000.
